Course summary

An action-packed day designed to teach small groups how to make a three-signature blank notebook with hand-painted cover, ribbon bookmark and coloured headband. In a single day experience the thrill of creating a 48-page professional-standard hardback book. We use simple, inexpensive equipment and with the help of our online tutorials and supplies from our mobile shop you can continue book-making for yourself immediately.

Tell me more ...

The day begins around 10.00am with a brief introduction and information about the parts of a book, cloth, board and paper grain, followed by the first stage of book-making. We prepare all routine procedures for you and provide every group member with a complete suite of equipment for exclusive use.

Following a break for coffee we create covers using resilient acrylic paints. This is the chance to put the accuracy of book-making to one side and let expressiveness run free. With Alan's artistic guidance see how easy it is to create a unique and alluring design for your special book.

After a 50-minute lunchbreak we enter the final stages of making the book: pasting covers on the boards to form the case, trimming the textblocks to size with a scalpel etc. Adding finishing touches such as a headband and book ribbon and casing in the textblock brings the book-making adventure to a conclusion. The afternoon session includes a well-earned break for tea and an opportunity to share a drink at the end of the day (approx 5.30pm).

What is provided?

All materials and equipment are provided. Each member of the group will create their own handbound book to take away.

For courses run from our studio we can also provide buffet lunch, home-baked treats and refreshments.

What size groups?

The course is ideally suited for groups of four to six people. It is intensive, but fun, and designed to teach the maximum number of book-making skills possible in a single day. Smaller groups by arrangement.

What age?

Suitable for all ages (please note sharp scalpels and needles are used during the book-making session - under 14s should be accompanied by a supervising adult).

Book Pressing

Books created on this course should ideally be pressed overnight under heavy weights. They can be left at the venue for collection next day or taken away for home-pressing under a pile of books or other heavy item.
